During his expedition to discover the Asian Spice Islands, the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan landed on the shores of Patagonia in 1520. This was his first encounter with the inhabitants of the Island which were huge in size, essentially giants. Magellan called them Patagones, a Spanish word meaning big feet, referring to the huge footprints the inhabitants left on the beach. That is where the name Patagonia was derived from. Magellan’s discovery inspired the creation of Patagonia Restaurant.
